Tony scida the hodges partnership6/29/2023 Hodges says many prisoners are angry and blame others. Once I’m in a gang, I’m challenged to do graffiti, do stealing, get a gun - and it usually ends up in some kind of violence.” “Then I cover it up with drugs, alcohol and join a gang. “If (I) don’t belong in (my) own family … then I will go in search of where I belong,” Hodges explains. PREP theory says that a person often ends up imprisoned due to harm they suffered when young that often led to quitting school, starting to use drugs and alcohol - even at age 10 or 11 - and hanging out with gang members to belong. “By going to the prison, it says to the people inside ‘You care enough about us to come visit us’ and that’s important,” Hodges said. She believes prisoners don’t believe in their own self-worth because of their backgrounds and their crimes. Hodges is most satisfied by developing personal relationships inside the prisons. “She’s touched and moved many more lives than she can possibly imagine, and she’s an inspiration to many, many people. “For many, many lives inside and out (of prison), including those who never even met her, they do the program and try to better themselves,” Waters said. Kevin Waters calls Hodges an agent of change. Of the prisoners she engaged with via her mail-in program and classroom programs, only 3% have returned to crime and to prison, according to PREP. Hodges, a Catholic school teacher for 40 years mostly in the Los Angeles area, taps those teaching skills to conduct in-person classes in prisons. But the outreach to inmates goes beyond the mail-in project. The lessons are mailed to inmates, who complete and return them to program staff at PREP, and they receive certificates upon completion. ![]() The courses in her program are designed to give inmates tools to change their attitudes and thought patterns. The fact that she’s able to do that - that she has that altruistic quality - speaks to her quest just to be of service.” “I’d venture to say, I don’t know this for a fact, she hasn’t been paid a great deal of money to do these things. “She helps people constantly, always trying to open or facilitate programs that can help mainly returning citizens,” Waters says, referring to inmates released from prison. PREP is an effort to provide in-prison coaching and self-development through mail-in courses, and has reached an estimated 40,000 prisoners nationwide, many of them serving life sentences. Waters later rose to the position of manager at the transition house and met weekly with Hodges, founder of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’s nationwide restorative justice effort, the Partnership for Re-Entry Program, or PREP. “She was instrumental in making that happen.” “Within three days, I was taken from that facility to one she was partnering with, and from there I was able to spend the next 52 days with my dad,” Waters recalls. But his parole agent knew someone who might be able to help, Sister Mary Sean Hodges, and Waters asked the sister if she could get him time with his father before he died. Waters wasn’t free to see his father who was sick with pancreatic cancer. He was one of them, not too long ago, doing 25 years of a life sentence in prison, and then sent to a transition house. Thr best pop mudic6/29/2023 ![]() Beat Happening's self-titled debut in 1985 would become the cornerstone for the lo-fi fuzzy intimacy of twee and anti-folk. Indie pop saw its first archetypes emerge in the '80s, which would set the table for the sound that still most often defines the genre. Indie rock was posited as an antidote to the slick, mainstream machinations of major pop artists, with its raw, lo-fi aesthetic hinting at a greater "sincerity" and the populist sensibilities of punk rock. The term indie music was shorthand for a kind of earnest, sincere guitar-centric rock 'n roll. Tracing indie music back to the '80s offers a chance to assess the style in its purest form. Indie started to branch out into its major tributaries - indie rock, punk, post-punk, and indie pop. The river of indie music started to flow in earnest in the '80s, becoming a recognizable genre in its own right. Which means that indie pop crystallizes into the recognizable genre we know today at the same time, even though it still wasn't called by that name for much of the decade. Indie music truly comes into its own in the 1980s. Buzzcocks' "Ever Fall In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)?".Punk, pop punk, alternative, and indie rock are pretty synonymous in their early decades. It's clear that much early punk rock was really just sped up rock and pop, with the much-dreaded Chuck Berry riffs blasting off over speedfreak rhythm sections and feral vocals. It's like that scene in High Fidelity, where Dick plays Sarah Gilbert's character the Stiff Little Fingers and a bunch of clueless punters ask if it's Green Day. While the stripped down minimalism and frenetic, furious fretwork of "Breakdown" or "Boredom" no doubt sounded downright misanthropic and alien in 1977, the infectious chord changes, hummable guitars, and chant-a-long lyrics just sound like a feel-good bop 40 years after the fact. While the original conception of indie pop refers to crate-digging hipsters with a penchant for jangly '60s pop, our expanded definition includes all things catchy and melodic. Even the most abrasive, uncompromising artists likely have a shred of pop about them, as well.įor the sake of this exploration, we'll use the Buzzcocks' Spiral Scratch EP as indie pop's Year Zero. With so many musicians vying for our limited time and resources, everybody needs to know how to appeal, how to stand out from the line noise. With so many artists forsaking the major label machine, crafting their catchy bangers in their bedrooms rather than multi-million dollar studios, it could be argued that a huge majority of musicians are DIY as they come. These days, being punk as hell and liking pop music aren't mutually exclusive, as we can see from the meteoric success of artists like Frankie Cosmos. Music historian Emily Dolan describes indie pop as having the DIY, stripped-down minimalism of Punk rock with "the sweetness and catchiness of pop music." While bands like Josef K and Orange Juice are peak examples of geeky hipsters with deep record collections and a penchant for DIY, today's broadened definition of Indie Rock allows us to turn the dial a little further back. Music journalist Simon Reynolds once pithily observed "Indie music was created in Scotland," referencing the rise of Glasgow's Postcard Records. Sureflap microchip cat feeder6/28/2023 The Whiskers Feeder-Robot is available in four different color combinations, with the body available in black or white, in combination with a clear food hopper or a more opaque smoke-colored option. ![]() We would have preferred other Feeder-Robot components were dishwasher-safe as well, though its washable components are easy to separate from the feeder's base and hand wash. A dishwasher-safe, hypoallergenic glass bowl is sold separately, adding a $30 surcharge to an already substantial investment. We were also less than satisfied with the included plastic bowl, since it can't be cleaned in the dishwasher and because some cats have skin allergies (however, all components are BPA-free). Regardless, the device performed flawlessly throughout our testing. It was our impression that this was a shipping error rather than anything specific to the product or manufacturer. ![]() While the Feeder-Robot has a more high-quality feel than many of the other feeders tested-with beefy, trustworthy components that slotted together intuitively-it's worth noting that the clear plastic food reservoir on our test model arrived cracked. An easy-to-read blue indicator light highlights whether or not the unit is currently operating on a programmed schedule. Whether a schedule is established using the app or on the control panel keypad, the Feeder-Robot stores the schedule locally and will continue to maintain the schedule even if it's offline. Thankfully, the Feeder-Robot doesn't rely on the app. While we've yet to spend enough time with the Feeder-Robot to gauge the usefulness of the app's more in-depth features, they provide unrivaled insights for the cat-owning data nerd: tracking feedings over time, pulling out daily averages, and providing other insights that can be exported to a CSV file ready for Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel. In addition to notifying you with a push notification at feeding times, the app also allows you to check food levels, build schedules, and tap a button to remotely dispense a snack-size serving. This same peace of mind is enhanced by the included backup battery, which can continue to run a feeder program even if the power goes out for up to 24 hours. "The notifications provide peace of mind, so I can spend less time worrying about my cats while I'm away." "The app is great!" one tester said, noting their general disdain for having to download an app for every new connected product before describing the Feeder-Robot as an exception. It's designed to more effectively funnel food into the dispenser, but also reduces the total capacity to 25 cups-still a substantial amount of food. The Feeder-Robot's reservoir can hold up to 32 cups of dry food, though anything other than small, round kibble will likely need the included Hopper Insert. If your cat doesn't overeat and you don't closely monitor servings, this "gravity mode" ensures that the feeder isn't dispensing an overflowing mound of food while you're away. There's also a setting that dispenses just enough food to keep the bowl full, with the Feeder-Robot checking its level every 6 hours. A dispenser that uses 1/4-cup increments is already installed in the Feeder-Robot, but you can swap it for an included 1/8-cup dispenser that provides more precise portion control (though this reduces the maximum single serving to 1/2 cup). It's easy to dial in precise meal times and serving increments with the Feeder-Robot's robust settings, through which you can dispense up to a full cup of food as frequently as eight times a day. Set up out of the box was easy, taking us about 15 minutes, including downloading and syncing the phone application (by scanning a QR code on the back of the feeder), which is available on iOS and Android. This makes it feel a little top heavy, though not enough to be concerned about cats knocking it over-bashing it with a ten-pound sandbag didn't budge it, so neither will your cat. Despite it's bulky dimensions, the Feeder-Robot tapers to a 9 x 11.25 inch footprint. The design of the Feeder-Robot is simultaneously futuristic and friendly, though it's definitely on the larger side, so buyers should be ready for it to take up a fair amount of space. The feeder scored especially high marks for its features, effectiveness, timer accuracy, and portion control. Our testers appreciated that the Whisker Feeder-Robot had a variety of intuitive feeding options and the most useful app of any feeder tested. Decode base646/28/2023 ![]() For example, a mail server may discard the eighth bit when sending emails or they could only send text, but not images, videos, archives, etc. ![]() But when the eight-bit byte approved as standard many systems used old standards and did not support the new one. ![]() Some decades ago, seven-bit, six-bit, and three-bit bytes were used. The history of the Base64 algorithm started when, in the past, engineers argued over how many bits should be in a byte. The 64 characters represent the 64 place-values for the base varies between implementations. Initially, the algorithm was named “printable encoding” and only in June 1992, RFC 1341 defines it as “Base64”. Other variations share this property but differ in the symbols chosen for the last two values an example is UTF-7. For example, MIME's Base64 implementation uses A–Z, a–z, and 0–9 for the first 62 values. This combination leaves the data unlikely to be modified in transit through information systems, such as email, that were traditionally not 8-bit clean. The general strategy is to choose 64 characters that are common to most encodings and that are also printable. The set of 64 characters represent the 64 place-values for the base varies between implementations. Base64 is particularly prevalent on the World Wide Web where its uses include the ability to embed image files or other binary assets inside textual assets such as HTML and CSS files. Three 8-bit bytes (i.e., a total of 24 bits) can, therefore, be represented by four 6-bit Base64 digits.Ĭommon to all binary-to-text encoding schemes, Base64 is designed to carry data stored in binary formats across channels that only reliably support text content. Each Base64 digit represents exactly 6 bits of data. The term Base64 originates from a specific MIME content transfer encoding. In computer science, Base64 is a group of binary-to-text encoding schemes that represent binary data in an ASCII string format by translating it into a radix-64 representation. Due to this algorithm, even Chinese characters, emojis, and images can be converted into a “readable” string.
